Little Bottles of Possibilities: Face Masks and Why You Need Them

I’ve always LOVED face masks. Back when I was a stay-at-home mom (20+ years ago) I would stroll the aisles at the giant HEB on Bee Caves and 71, with little Juliet in tow, and check out the skincare products. There were always so many masks to choose from and I liked them because masks seem more than just skincare. They are "me time" and they are pampering and they are fresh, glowing skin.

Now I know that drugstore-quality skincare really isn’t effective, but I still feel the same way about face masks: they are like little jars of possibilities.

We carry several masks at Body Tonic but they’ve never been top sellers. My only guess as to why is that skincare products are prioritized and if you have to choose, you’re probably gonna grab the AlphaRet and not the clay mask.

With the holidays coming up though, masks can be cute stocking stuffers, or else they can provide your stressed out skin with a burst of hydration and glow. Here are the masks we carry, what they do, and why they work:

Skin Ceuticals Clarifying Clay Mask

This mask is perfect for when you’re feeling like your face needs a deep clean! It has a thicker consistency and dries when it’s ready to come off. It’s great for teenagers with breakouts, and for use between Hydrafacial sessions, to keep your pores cleaned out, and oil under control.

What’s in it?

  • A hydroxy acid blend to help exfoliate dead skin cells

  • Natural earth clays (kaolin and bentonite) to decongest pores, lift impurities, and help remove excess oils

  • Aloe and chamomile to help calm and soothe the skin

Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5 Mask

This mask takes the Hydrating B5 Gel to the next level. It’s a thick, clear gel mask that does not harden. It’s for use weekly, or bi-weekly if you’re really dry. And pro tip: you can sleep in this for alllll the extra hydration! (You’ll have to wash your pillow case of course)!

What’s in it?

  • High concentrations of hyaluronic acid for hydration

  • Vitamin B5 for support of skin repair

  • A mix of hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and urea help restore you skin’s natural moisture balance

Skin Ceuticals Phyto Corrective Mask

Phyto Corrective Mask contains highly-concentrated botanical extracts, a calming dipeptide, and hyaluronic acid to soothe temporary skin reactivity (redness and heat) and restore moisture. It reduces visible redness and cools skin by five degrees. It’s perfect to use:

  • After sun exposure

  • After sports

  • Post-procedure

What’s in it?

  • Soothing botanicals: a blend of cucumber, thyme, and olive extracts

  • Calming dipeptide that helps reduce heat sensitivity

  • Hyaluronic acid for long lasting hydration and to improve skin texture

Revision’s Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

It’s easy to get into the spirit of the season when your face smells like pumpkin pie! There are a lot of pumpkin-scented skincare products around but this one is high quality and effective. It’s a scrub and mask in one, with naturally-derived pumpkin enzyme, plus pumpkin and cocoa micro-exfoliating powders, that help optimize cell turnover and remove pore-clogging debris.

What’s in it?

  • Pumpkin enzymes help exfoliate and also provide antioxidants to defend against damaging free radicals

  • Gold Brazillian clay draws out impurities

  • Glycerin helps hydrate

  • Botanicals soothe your skin

  • Amazing pumpkin scent

Revison’s Pore Purifying Clay Mask

This is another option for oily or acneic skin. Unlike the Skin Ceuticals clay mask, this one is thinner and does not harden. It is made with high quality clays that unclog pores and absorb excess oil. It refines the appearance of pores and deeply cleanses skin, leaving it polished and smooth.

What’s in it?

  • Freshwater, European silt to purify and soothe skin

  • High quality clays to unclog pores and absorb excess oil

  • Salicylic acid and Larch Arabinogalactan (wood derived from the larch tree) for mild exfoliation

  • Tea tree and botanicals help soothe skin

I have all of these masks except the Pore Purifying, mainly because I do prefer a clay mask to harden. Some of our staff don’t like the way that feels, so they enjoy the Revision’s Pore Purifying Mask more. A lot comes down to just personal preference. But you’ll never go wrong with any products we carry. They all have effective ingredients that are formulated to penetrate the skin barrier and do what they say they're going to do!
