Jade, Roses and Pearls: Body Tonic's Gettin' All Eastern...

I first heard of this facial, and of jade rollers, from our acupuncturist Lauren. With the addition of acupuncture, we also wanted to begin adding in some more Eastern type skincare treatments. This facial was our first addition, and there will be more to come, including Ayurvedic treatments.

Like many Eastern treatments or traditions that finally make their way into mainstream US culture, these two products have been used in China for thousands of years. I have done this facial a few times and it is very effective, particularly for removing impurities. I use the jade roller on its own as well.

The pearl powder is actually ground up pears - pearls that are not jewelry grade. The pearls

are rich in amino acids and dozens of minerals; eight of the amino acids contained in pearls are “essential” – in other words, they cannot be produced in the body but are required for health. Various components in pearl powder participate in DNA and RNA metabolic activities, and thus can support cell renewal and diminish the signs of aging, like wrinkles. Pearl powder can be taken internally, but it can also be used to make a masque and applied topically. We mix it with rosewater, which by the way smells AMAZING, and it forms a thin paste and is brushed onto the skin and hardens. The masque draws out impurities and when used repeatedly can even and lighten skin tone. The first time I tried the masque it drew out every bit of oil-clogged nastiness that was in my face.

The jade rolling is a favorite of mine. The jade stone stays cool and does not take on the heat of the body. The natural properties of the jade stone help increase circulation and blood flow in the face, and the rolling motion helps with lymphatic drainage, which helps reduce puffiness and also rids the body of toxins. To me, it also just feels very relaxing, particularly on the temple area and around the jaw bone. I clench my jaw a lot, so having the jade roll over that area helped release tension. The facial will leave your skin looking plump and hydrated and the jade roller, which increases circulation, will leave you looking flush, like you just exercised, or maybe like you just applied your favorite Bobbi Brown shimmer brick.
