Mondays are really not the best days: You’ve got a spread of days reaching out in front of you that hold any number of complications or potential snags. Everyone’s job has it’s own unique challenges, but truly, every Monday, even though I’m staring at a whole week of work, I am always happy to make my drive down Barton Creek Blvd to our lovely Body Tonic. I love these ladies I work with and we all have our unique friendships.
With a work atmosphere that feels more like a family, brining in someone new isn’t just like hiring a new employee, it’s more like…adding another body part or something! How will this person fit into our well oiled machine? We have so little turnover it doesn’t happen often. But recently we did take on someone new: Jennifer! You may have already met her. She’s been spending time with Iris and Gina, shadowing their clients and treatments, as well as training with Iris, with other professional trainers, and injecting on her own. Her name is Jennifer Mixson; she was a Registered Nurse for years before going back to get her Masters Degree and becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Most of her nursing career has been in labor and delivery and women’s health, but she has wanted to make a switch to aesthetics for some time.
After several months of her being with Body Tonic, it’s finally time to introduce her to you all! I gave her a list of questions for inquiring minds, and she sent me back some interesting answers. In her own words, here’s Jennifer:
What made you want to enter the world of aesthetics? And when did you know you wanted to make the switch?
I have always been intrigued about aesthetics. However, my passion of coming into the industry didn’t start until a couple of years ago when I was talking to a friend about her skin and treatments. I loved the idea that I could get a chance to work in an environment that inspires positivity and artistry. The field of aesthetics is constantly changing, and I knew that the industry would be able to fuel my passion for learning. Developing a rapport with my clients is of utmost importance to me. Being in this type of setting inspires me to build trust with my clients and to have a long-lasting relationship with them.
It is also a humbling position for myself because it allows me the opportunity to help clients feel beautiful, boost their self-confidence and their self-esteem to help achieve their goals.
I knew that I wanted to make the switch when I entered school again to become a Nurse Practitioner. I felt as though it was my calling to be in a specialized area to where I could become an expert. It is the entire package that I have been looking for and I am so excited for all the opportunities that will come my way.
Why did you choose nursing as your career? How long have you been in nursing?
Many aspects of my life helped me to choose the nursing field. First and foremost, I have always enjoyed helping others. When I was about 10 years old my family and I were the first on the scene to help a woman in need that had been hurt. I remember trying to help her as much as I could and watching medical professionals come on the scene to help her as well. That moment changed me; I was fascinated from that point on in the medical field. I always loved to learn in school, and anything related to health and science I excelled at. I still enjoy learning to this day; and I love expanding my knowledge and learning new and different aspects of healthcare.
I have been in the nursing field for the past 10 years, and there has never been a day where I regretted making the decision to become a nurse.
What did you like best about being a labor and delivery nurse?
I loved helping women and empowering them through one of the hardest and scariest times of their lives. Most women that have had children remember their labor story. I loved being a part of that story and helping their little ones come into the world safely. It was an honor to be by their side and help them transition to a new addition in their life.
When you aren’t at Body Tonic what would we find you doing?
When I’m not at Body Tonic, I am a busy mom with three kids that are 6 and younger. I have two girls, and my youngest is a boy. They are all starting to get to the age where we can get out to do more things together. We have fun taking small day trips to the park, going to swimming pools over the summer, and we go to the YMCA to do all sorts of activities. I also enjoy spending time with my husband. He’s one of my biggest supporters, and we always have a great time just getting out to dinner (Salt Trader’s is a FAVORITE!) and heading to a movie (I LOVE movie theater popcorn!). I have three dogs as well, a sheltie, golden retriever, and husky-heeler mix. My kids sure do love being around them.
One thing that I am a huge supporter of is a Keto/Low carb lifestyle. When I get the chance, I love to look up new keto recipes and try new things out. There’s even a bakery in Georgetown that sells keto desserts (WHAT?!?)! By the way, yes, I know I said above that I love popcorn, but I am also a huge fan of moderation and living life dirty keto style!
What has surprised you most about medical aesthetics? What do you like best so far?
Wow, where do I even start! I have been surprised by so many things within the area of aesthetics. I think one of the biggest surprises is the whole transformation process. It is fascinating to see how different products can help a client age backward! It makes my heart so happy to have a client look in the mirror and see that WOW factor! Their joy on their face makes everything about this job worth it! My favorite area to inject is the cheeks. So far, I think this area has the most impact because it helps to bring life back to multiple areas of the face while only injecting one aspect of the face.
I hope it’s evident from her words how full of passion she is! I love her energy and her brains. Jennifer is a sweetheart, and talented as well (she mentioned cheek enhancement being her favorite so far, and she did my cheeks recently - they are fabulous!). We will start filling her schedule soon with injectable appointments! I can’t wait for all to know and love her as much as our Gina and Iris!
